“My friend and I were looking for a martial arts studio that could accommodate our 5 (collective) children. After trying a few different places, we hadn't found a match, but we had narrowed down what we were looking for. We wanted a place where: 1) all children ages 3-7 could join in the class (we were willing to stay for two back to back classes); 2) there had to be a good mix of boys and girls enrolled; 3) the class size couldn't be too big; 4) class ideally would start after 3:30 pm but before 5 pm; 5) we didn't need to sign a year-long contract (we were willing to pay a slightly higher price for that) as our children can be fickle; and 6) our children needed to enjoy it.
We finally tried out Dragon on Sepulveda. It met our requirements, which were rather superficial and pragmatic. But that's not what impressed me (I'm sure there are other schools that could meet these requirements). I was impressed rather by the way the instructor dealt with my son, who's a bit on the sensitive side. He managed to have 3 meltdowns over the course of his first two classes. The instructor didn't bat an eye. I was prepared to throw in the towel and go home, particularly after the last one, but the instructor handled it so well that by the end of each class my son was laughing and smiling. They clearly put emphasis not just on physical fitness and form, but on mental and emotional strength. It's about the whole person and about character building. Big thumbs up.”
